FAQs

How often should I get an eye exam?

We generally recommend having a full eye exam once a year to keep your vision sharp and your eyes healthy. That said, how often you need an exam can vary based on your age, overall health, and vision needs.

For example, kids might need more frequent checkups to make sure their eyes are developing properly, and adults over 65 often benefit from regular exams to catch age-related conditions like cataracts or macular degeneration early.

If you have certain health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, or a family history of eye diseases like glaucoma or retinal issues, you may need to come in more often. Don’t worry—we’ll guide you every step of the way.

At each visit, your optometrist will take a close look at your eye health, address any vision concerns, and let you know what exam schedule makes the most sense for you. We’re here to make sure you get the care that’s right for you and your lifestyle.

How long does it take to get an eye exam?

Most eye exams take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on your unique needs. The exact time can vary based on things like your eye health history, the type of exam you’re having, and whether any extra testing is needed.

During your visit, we’ll check how clearly you’re seeing, look for common vision issues like nearsightedness or astigmatism, and make sure your eyes are working well together. We’ll also take a close look at your overall eye health, which may include advanced imaging or tests like glaucoma screening and dilation to get a better view of the retina and optic nerve.

For many people, the full exam can be wrapped up in about 30 minutes. But if you have certain conditions like diabetes, or a family history of eye diseases, your visit may take a little longer so we can do a more in-depth check.

We always take the time needed to give you personalized, thorough care. If any concerns come up or you need specialized testing—for things like dry eye, cataracts, or macular degeneration—we’ll make sure everything is covered and explain what’s next.

Your eye health matters to us, and we want you to leave feeling confident and cared for.

Do you accept walk-in appointments?

Same day and walk-in appointments are accepted based on availability.

We recommend booking your appointment ahead of time so we can reserve a spot that works best for you. Scheduling in advance helps us keep things running smoothly and ensures you get the focused care and attention you deserve.

Your eye health is important to us, and we’re here to support you however we can!

What should I bring to my appointment?

We’re excited to see you! To help your visit go smoothly, here are a few things to bring along:

  • Please bring a form of payment, as exam fees apply. If you have any questions about pricing, feel free to check out our Pricing Policy or reach out to us.
  • Don’t forget your Ontario Health Card and any vision insurance details you may have.
  • If you wear glasses, bring your current pair so we can check your prescription.
  • Contact lens wearer? Please bring your lenses and the original box—it helps us see your exact prescription and brand.
  • A list of any medications you’re currently taking is also helpful for your eye health assessment.
  • And lastly, consider bringing sunglasses—your eyes might be a little sensitive after dilation.

Thanks for coming prepared—it helps us give you the best care possible!

Can I book my appointment online?

Yes, you can! If you’re an existing patient at our clinic, you can easily book your appointment online through our patient portal. It shows real-time availability, so you can choose a time that works best for your schedule.

Not set up on the portal yet? No problem—just give us a call or send us a message, and we’ll help you get started. Our team is happy to walk you through the quick setup process so you can enjoy the convenience of booking your visits anytime, anywhere. Contact us.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

We get it—plans can change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we just ask that you give us at least 24 hours’ notice. This helps us keep things running smoothly and gives us a chance to offer your time slot to another patient who may be waiting.

If notice isn’t given, a $50 cancellation fee may apply—but we always do our best to be understanding and flexible when we can. If something comes up, just reach out to our team as soon as possible, and we’ll be glad to help you find a new time that works.

Is there parking available at the clinic?

Yes—parking is easy and convenient! We have plenty of spaces available right in front of the building. Whether you’re coming in for a quick visit or bringing the whole family, our parking setup is designed to make your visit as smooth and stress-free as possible.

If you need any assistance when you arrive, just let us know—we’re always happy to help!

Do you offer contact lenses fittings?

Yes, we do! Whether you’re trying contact lenses for the first time or just need to update your prescription, we’re here to help you find the perfect fit. Our contact lens fittings are designed to make sure your lenses are comfortable, effective, and suit your lifestyle.

The process includes a thorough eye health check, precise measurements, and personalized recommendations based on your vision needs and daily routine. In some cases, we may schedule a follow-up visit to make sure everything’s working just right and to make any needed adjustments.

Since contact lens fittings are a specialized service, there is an additional fee, which can vary depending on the complexity of your needs. If you’d like more details about pricing, feel free to give us a call—we’ll be happy to walk you through everything!

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, we offer direct billing to Canada Life, Sunlife and Manulife.

In cases where direct billing is not an option (already used benefits, portal down, etc) the patient will be responsible for payment of any outstanding balance at the end of their appointment.

Are eye exams covered by OHIP?

Yes, in some cases! OHIP covers basic eye exams for patients who are:

  • 19 years old or younger
  • 65 years old or older
  • Living with certain medical conditions that affect the eyes (like diabetes or glaucoma)

At our clinic, we go beyond the basics with comprehensive eye health assessments. These include advanced diagnostic tools that help us catch early signs of serious conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. These specialized tests aren’t covered by OHIP, so there may be an additional fee.

If you’d like to know more about what’s included in your exam and any related costs, feel free to ask when booking. We’re happy to walk you through everything and ensure you feel confident about your care.

What happens during a comprehensive eye exam?

Our eye exams are personalized, thorough, and designed to make you feel comfortable every step of the way. While not every test is needed for everyone, here are some of the things we may include in your visit:

Visual Acuity Test – The classic eye chart test to check how clearly you see at different distances.

Refraction Assessment – Helps us find your perfect glasses or contact lens prescription.

Pupil Dilation – Lets us take a closer look at the retina and optic nerve to check for early signs of conditions like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.

Eye Pressure Test (Tonometry) – A quick and gentle test (no puff of air!) to screen for glaucoma using our comfortable Icare Tonometer.

Slit Lamp Exam – Helps us examine the front of your eyes for signs of cataracts, dryness, or infections.

OCT Imaging – Advanced scans of your retina and optic nerve to catch early signs of macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Color Vision Test – Screens for color blindness or difficulties distinguishing colors.

Binocular Vision Test – Assesses how well your eyes work together, especially helpful if you get eye strain or headaches.

Health History Review – We’ll go over your medical and family history to better understand your overall eye health and risks.

What are some common eye issues and how can you help?
Cataracts – Cloudy vision, glare, and trouble seeing at night? Cataracts are common as we age. We can assess your vision and refer you for surgery if needed.

Glaucoma – Often symptom-free at first, glaucoma can lead to vision loss if untreated. We focus on early detection and ongoing monitoring.

Macular Degeneration – Blurred central vision or trouble seeing in low light? We use advanced imaging to catch signs early and provide referrals for treatment.

Diabetic Retinopathy – If you have diabetes, regular eye exams are key. We monitor for changes and help you manage your eye health with timely care and referrals.

Blepharitis – Itchy, red, crusty eyelids? We offer gentle treatments like warm compresses and lid care routines to soothe symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Dry Eye – Burning, irritation, or tired eyes? We offer a range of solutions, from artificial tears to lifestyle tips, to help you feel more comfortable.

Flashes & Floaters – Seeing sudden flashes or more floaters than usual? It could be a sign of something serious—we’ll take a close look and guide next steps.

Eye Allergies – Red, itchy, watery eyes? We can recommend drops and tips to help you manage seasonal or year-round allergies.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) – Early treatment is key for kids with amblyopia. We provide referrals and support for therapies like patching or glasses.

Presbyopia – Having trouble reading up close? Around age 40, it’s common. We offer reading glasses, multifocals, and contact lenses that make life clearer.

Not sure what’s going on with your eyes? Just give us a call or book a visit—we’re here to help you stay comfortable, confident, and in control of your vision. Contact us.
